Like many of you, after Hurricane Helene ripped through multiple states and devastated so many lives, we have just wanted to help our neighbors. The collections in the Lowcountry of necessities that have been delivered to impacted areas has been nothing short of amazing. We now have the opportunity to do a collection that is near and dear to our hearts.
The LEAF Global Arts nonprofit organization based out of Asheville, NC has been an important part of our family's life for years. Our friends and family have all heard about our amazing experiences at the Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) in Black Mountain, NC. The festival is held twice a year since the founding of the organization in 1995. It is a celebration of community, global art and culture, live music, craft, nature, and more. The organization has grown and expanded their programs beyond the festival and is now a year-round source of inspiration through the Arts in Western North Carolina. All of their programs support their mission of "CONNECTING CULTURES and CREATING COMMUNITY through world music, arts education, preservation and experiences. The closest distance between two people is a story, a song, or a dance." They bring a lot of programs into the local schools and to the children in the community.
This is where our opportunity to help comes in. We reached out to to LEAF Global Arts and have worked with them on the best way that we can support them and their mission as they work to support their community. They are currently working with the organization Beloved Asheville to assemble "Buckets of Love".They organize a variety of art supplies, educational materials and toys to donate to children impacted by the Hurricane. They have shared with us a specific list of items that they need in order to continue this program. We are counting on our great community here in Charleston to help us with a collection of these supplies.
Here are the details: We will collecting items from this list at Island Expressions all week long starting today Monday, October 14th through Saturday, October 19th. Bring them in during our regular hours (M-F: 10am-6pm, Sat: 10-5pm). Next week, my husband Pete and I will be personally delivering the collection to the LEAF Global Arts headquarters in Asheville. Please be respectful of the requests and if the items are not new, please make sure they are 'like new.' Also, ideally they ask to receive things that do not create a lot of trash, so the least amount of plastic, glitter, and packaging, the better. Please be mindful of this.
Here is the list of supplies they are requesting:
-Crayons
-Water based markers, like Crayola's
-School Glue
